Project Background

The Nganda Lifetree ARR Project (“the Project”) is a community-based project in the Nganda arrondissement of Senegal’s Kaffrine region, which aims to enhance sustainable forestry and community resilience by restoring degraded lands through increased forest cover in farms and forests, while improving livelihoods and supporting climate adaptation through a combination of agroforestry, reforestation, and community-driven initiatives. The project will establish forest gardens on smallholder plots, providing windbreaks, nitrogen-fixing trees, fruit crops, and fodder to enhance both productivity and ecosystem health. Additionally, reforestation activities will rehabilitate degraded forests, promoting biodiversity and supporting the return of wildlife. Community-driven initiatives, such as village savings, beekeeping, and local crop commercialization, will bolster local livelihoods and resilience, with training and market access provided to ensure long-term sustainability. The project will be implemented in collaboration with the NGO Mother Trees, which supports farmers, community leaders and forest stewards to restore degraded landscapes with best practices in regenerative agroforestry and forest ecosystem restoration. Collaboration with Mother Trees, local coordinators, and government will secure land tenure for smallholders, enabling the community to thrive while restoring and protecting their natural resources.
